About Us
The Houston State of Health Data Portal (the Data Portal) was created after the executive committee that was governing the development of “State of Health in Houston/Harris County” decided to transition to an electronic format. The data portal was initiated as a collaborative project among five stakeholders that included the Houston Health Department, Harris County Public Health Department, Harris Health system, Houston Methodist Hospital system and Memorial Herman Hospital system.
During subsequent meetings with the partners, feedback was sought on what would be most useful for the stakeholders and areas that need improvement. By the soft launch of the data portal (2019), there were 11 agencies that were part of the collaborative. Feedback from these agencies are incorporated in the updates and improvement for the data portal.
Houston State of Health helps residents learn about and explore the health of their community. Presented by the Houston Health Department, this user-friendly interactive website offers local health data, resources, best practices, news articles and information about community events.
Houston State of Health gives our community the tools needed to understand public health indicators affecting our quality of life and set goals and evaluate progress. Community groups, schools, health associations, chambers of commerce, tourism and many other organizations can use this information to showcase the benefits of living in the city of Houston, opportunities for improvement and utilize data for funding applications. Master planners and government can use this data to establish community goals on a variety of platforms. The data is updated whenever source data is updated, providing the most up-to-date information of its kind.
The evolving and flexible nature of Houston State of Health allows users to contribute information and ideas. The promising practices section highlights exemplary programs and successes of local, state, and national health departments; it also allows individuals to search for information when they face a similar situation. Our goal is to strengthen and build healthier communities through the provision of state-of the art web-based population health data and improvement tools. We hope you find it useful.
